STC engines are typically 30,000 miles or less. They are clean and well inspected before they are sold. Even if an independent seller says the JDM engine is reliable and well-maintained, it’s still ideal that you buy a JDM engine from a reputable source.
If you don’t purchase it from a reputable seller, you will likely end up having a JDM engine with more than 30K miles and possible problems not disclosed to you, the buyer. That’s why before checking out the market, it pays to have a little knowledge to help you select the right engine.
Buy a JDM Engine from a Local Seller
STC is a local seller based in California. You can pick your engine and ask to have it compression-tested right in front of you to show there are no leaks. However, you may need to pay a little more for this procedure.
If you choose to have the engine shipped for you, know that STC is a reputable seller with a fair return policy. We only ship a complete engine. Or you can choose to purchase some components that you need for the swap.
The guys at STC are extremely helpful and you won’t be disappointed with the JDM engine you will buy from here.
Things to Look for During Inspection
When you visit STC to purchase your JDM engine, make sure that you conduct a thorough inspection. To inspect it, remove the oil dipstick so you can look at what’s inside. Make sure that when wiping it with a paper towel, it’s clean.
You should not buy an engine that has brownish color on the inside. This type of engine has higher mileage. Avoid engines with black walls.
Check the cam lobe as well. Make sure that there is no wear. Then, you may ask the guys from STC to do a compression test. However, if the engine has been sitting there for a long time, the result of the test may not be accurate.
However, it’s rare that a JDM engine at STC sits in the stock room there for a long time. Typically, after importing it from Japan, the engines are sold within a month or two.
Then again, you can still ask the guys there to do a compression test. It’s also vital that you have the spark plugs tested.
As you prepare the engine for installation, you must change the basic maintenance parts. STC sourced its parts and engines from Japan so you can be sure that they’re genuine.
